Canada-wide Study of Massage Therapy

  • In 2006, Canadians spent more that $5.6 billion out of pocket on visits to providers of alternative medicine, up from nearly $2.8 billion in 1997.

  • Nationally, based on 2006 survey data, the projected annual expenditure by all Canadians for massage therapy equaled $1,476,539,157.  This exceeds expenditures for chiropractic care - $832,910,323; and for acupuncture - $310,249,390.

  • Between 1997 and 2006, the costs of massage therapy covered by insurance rose 21 percentage points (36% to 57%).  This increase is attributed to insurance plans that solicit subscribers’ input regarding the types of coverage they prefer.

  • Massage therapy was the most frequently utilized alternative therapy for neck and back problems, seconded by chiropractic care.

  • Use of alternative therapy rose with education levels – 62% of university graduates had used alternative medicines in the year prior to the 2006 survey, while 37% of those who had completed high school had done so.
