| | NEW On-line/On-campus Blended Option
(Distance Education Option)
Do you want to qualify as an RMT, but live outside commuting distance from our campus? Do you have a young family or employment which prevents you from enrolling in our 18- or 22-month on-campus Massage Therapy Diploma Program? Are you a practicing Massage Therapist who requires Continuing Education Units or wants to upgrade their hours?
For those who find it more convenient to study on-line rather than attend classes at our Halifax campus for the currently-required 22 months (Massage Therapy Diploma Program) or 18 months (Fast track Diploma Program), we now offer an option – our “blended” program. Students choosing this option gain on-line credits in our lecture-type courses, such as Anatomy & Physiology, Neurology, and Research Methods, for example, completing this part of the program in a two-year time frame.
*The next start date for the online portion of the blended program is March 28, 2011.
Once the on-line courses are successfully completed, students then attend classes here, at our campus in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for the full-time 10 month program to gain credit in our hands-on courses and clinical practicum - completing requirements for our 2280 hour Massage Therapy Diploma. Students can also elect to transfer to one of our Ontario or Alberta campuses to complete their reduced course load over a period of 18-22 months.
On-line credits earned through the Halifax campus can be transferred to either our two Ontario campuses or our campus in Calgary, Alberta for students who wish to take the practical courses there. Students choosing this option would attend classes at CCMH in Toronto or Cambridge - taking either 22 months (August start) or 18 months (January or May start) or in Calgary to complete the on-campus practical courses and earn their Diploma. Students who choose to transfer should be aware that there are tuition differences as well as differences in costs for books and expenses, when compared to those in Halifax.
The blended option is identical to our on-campus Massage Therapy Diploma Program. Admissions requirements, course costs, textbooks, expenses, curriculum, course outlines, and successful completion of the introductory courses all remain the same. The difference is that students can complete lecture type classes on-line, then attend practical classes at our Halifax campus to complete course requirements and become a Registered Massage Therapist.** For more information, or to try an online demonstration, please contact our Admissions Coordinator, Sheri Christie at sheric@collegeofmassage.com or call (902) 832-3268, ext. 105
**The Massage Therapists’ Association of Nova Scotia (MTANS); the Prince Edward Island Massage Therapy Association; and the College of Massage Therapy of Ontario (CMTO) recognize our Massage Therapy Diploma, regardless of whether courses are completed at our campus or as an online/on-site blend. Applicants who may be interested in joining other colleges/associations should check with them before they apply to our distance program.

Delivery of On-Site Courses
Completing the Massage Therapy Diploma Program requires the student to attend full-time, practical classes at CCMH – Halifax, or part-time classes at either of the Ontario campuses or the Calgary campus. Full-time classes at the Halifax campus, located in Bedford, Nova Scotia, are scheduled Monday through Friday with a morning class from 8:30-11:30 and an afternoon class from 12:15-3:15. Beginning in the later weeks of Section 1, plus all weeks of Sections 2 and 3, the student will be required to participate in Student Clinic and Outreach Clinic, one to three evenings per week.
Comprehensive Exams for On-line and On-site Courses
Upon completion of the on-line portion of the Distance Education Program, the student who wishes to fulfill the requirements of our Massage Therapy Diploma Program will be required to attend practical classes, full-time, at our Halifax campus, or part-time at one of our other CCMH campuses across Canada. Prior to beginning the first on-site, practical course, each student must successfully complete a Comprehensive Written Exam which covers subject matter from all on-line courses. The purpose of this exam is to review completed course material and to evaluate the competency of each student. This exam is written on-campus in the week before practical classes begin. Students must schedule a date and time with the Director of Admissions.
Upon completion of the entire program, the student will be required to complete a Comprehensive Written and Practical Exam covering subject matter taught on-site. These examinations will take place the week following the final week of classes and will be scheduled by the Director of Education.
Distance Education Option – Frequently Asked Questions
How is the on-line program different from the program offered on-campus?
Students who select the on-line option complete all lecture-type classes off campus using their own PCs and internet connection (dial up is OK). This takes 2 years of study, involving 8 hrs. of on-line lecture weekly, plus approximately 22 hours of self-directed study - assignments, text readings, course notes, on-line-seminars and discussions. Upon completion of the on-line portion of the Massage Therapy Diploma Program, students then attend classes here at our Halifax campus for approximately 10 months of full time study in practical, hands-on courses and to complete their clinical practicum.
What if I have questions or need help with my on-line courses?
Our on-line program includes interactive features so that students can communicate with one another as well as with the instructor. Our instructors are also available to answer student questions on-line or by telephone.
Are the qualifications the same for students who study on-line?
Absolutely. All of our “blended” on-line/on-site graduates complete 2280 hours of study registered by the Nova Scotia Department of Education. Our diploma is recognized and approved by the Massage Therapists’ Association of Nova Scotia (MTANS) as an educational qualification allowing them to register for provincial examinations and leading to the designation “Registered Massage Therapist”. Our on-line option is also recognized by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO), the New Brunswick Massotherapy Association, the Association of New Brunswick Massage Therapists, Inc., and the PEI Massage Therapy Association. Students who intend to practice in other provinces should check with their province’s regulatory colleges and associations.
How about admissions requirements and tuition fees*?
Admissions requirements are exactly the same as for our on-campus program. For more information, please contact our Admissions Assistant, Sheri Christie at sheric@collegeofmassage.com or call (902) 832-3268, ext. 105
The tuition ($15,005.25 for the full, 3 year program) and books/expenses (approximately $2,400 total) are also the same. Tuition is normally divided into 2 payments per year over the 3 years. However, a monthly payment plan can also be arranged. In addition, the Nova Scotia Department of Education's Private Career Colleges Division requires a Training Completion Fund (TFC) remittance of 1% of total tuition ($150) from all newly enrolled students.
Year One (on-line) - Tuition: $3490.11 Books: $524 TFC: $150.05 Year Two (on-line) - Tuition: $3045.51 Books: $42 Year Three (on-site) - Tuition $8469.63 Books: $424 Year Three (on-site) - Equipment: $1,415
*Dollar amounts subject to change
Is the Distance Option eligible for Student Loans?
We advise students to contact the student loan centre in their home province to inquire about eligibility. Visit www.canlearn.ca for information about student assistance and other ways to pay for school. Students may also want to meet with banking representatives to inquire about bank lines of credit for students.
What about the required Introduction Courses?
If students are not able to attend our Introduction Courses here in Halifax, they have several options:
1. Request exemption from Introduction to Life Sciences for previously completed course work, such as university or college courses in a life science; for example, biology, chemistry, anatomy, or physiology.
OR
2. Complete comparable introductory courses at any CCMH or WCCMT location.
OR
3. Complete the Introductory Courses on-line. Introduction to Massage Therapy requires approximately 16 hours of workbook study, providing a basic understanding of techniques, effects and hygiene, followed by a quiz. Applicants will also be required to schedule an appointment with a Registered Massage Therapist and complete a report on their experience.
For Introduction to Life Sciences, the on-line course would require purchase of Barron’s Anatomy & Physiology - The Easy Way, 2nd Edition (approximately $30 – available through the College), completion of assignments, quizzes, and a comprehensive exam.
Can I transfer the on-line credits to other CCMH or WCCMT campuses?
On-line credits earned through the Halifax campus can be transferred to our two Ontario campuses or to our Alberta campus for students who wish to take the practical courses there. Students choosing this option would attend part time classes at CCMH in Toronto or Cambridge or Calgary - taking either 22 months (August start) or 18 months (January or May start) to complete the on-campus practical courses and earn their Diploma. Students who choose to transfer to Ontario or Alberta should be aware that there are tuition differences as well as differences in costs for books and expenses. Ontario students who complete the on-campus work at our Ontario Colleges would not be eligible for OSAP, as they would not be full time students.
WCCMT is a fully accredited as an on site only education provider in the Province of British Columbia and therefore unable to offer transfer credit for course work undertaken through the CCMH Halifax on line option .
What is MoodleTM and will it work with my computer?
Moodle is a free and Open Source e-learning software platform, also known as a Course Management System (CMS) or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The word Moodle is an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment.
Students log on to Moodle via a web browser (ie, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, etc). This can be done with a dial-up connection, and minimal hard drive space. Moodle can be used with any operating system, which means your computer can be a PC running Windows, a Mac using OS X, or a Linux box with a distribution of your choice.
